Every contractor has been burned by unreliable labour at some point. The engineer who does not turn up on day three. The pair who quit halfway through a pipework first fix. The self-employed installer who talks a good game but cannot read a wiring diagram. These problems cost more than just money — they cost programme delays, client relationships, and your reputation.
The first thing to check is whether the labour supplier actually understands the trade. A general construction agency can find you a labourer with a CSCS card, but they will not know the difference between R410A and R32 refrigerant. At Aboveboard Group, we only supply air conditioning and mechanical engineers because that is what we do ourselves. We know what a good brazed joint looks like and we know when someone is bluffing.
Second, look for consistency. A reliable engineer turns up every day, works the full hours, and communicates properly with the site team. We track attendance meticulously and we remove anyone from our pool who falls below standard. Our repeat clients stay with us because they know our engineers will be on site, on time, every day.
Third, check the tools and qualifications. A proper AC engineer should carry gauges, a vacuum pump, a pipe bender, and an electrical multimeter at minimum. They should hold a valid F-Gas certificate for refrigerant handling and understand the Safe Handling of Refrigerants protocol. Without these basics, they are not an air conditioning engineer — they are a general tradesman with a drill.
Fourth, think about the relationship. The cheapest day rate might save you fifty pounds a day, but if the engineer walks off site on Wednesday and you spend Thursday finding a replacement, you have lost three days of productivity. We charge a fair rate because we provide reliable people who stay for the full duration and deliver quality work.
Finally, consider the backup. What happens if your engineer calls in sick? A one-man band has no cover. A proper labour supplier should have depth in their pool. At Aboveboard Group, we maintain relationships with over thirty active engineers and our WhatsApp network extends to nearly a thousand. If someone drops out, we can usually fill the gap the same day.
If you are pricing a project and need labour support, give us a call. We will tell you honestly whether we can help, what level of engineer you need, and what the realistic cost looks like. No false promises, no disappearing acts — just proper air conditioning labour from people who know the trade.
